Lives & works in the Kalahari Desert

Art is music in colour. At times it is poetry at others... silence.

I seek to express the grace of the quiet musing moment, the inner-dialogues and conversations with nature that occur within the seasons, emotions, experiences and tides of life.

For me, the inspiration and the muse is the endlessness – the interconnection between all things; people, places - our urban and rural collectiveness. I do not think that inspiration is something that we find within, but rather something that we dip into… like diving into a river or an ocean, falling into a road, walking in a field, a forest. All nature is conversation and provides us with clues into our own inner workings and or me it is often my redemption.

I choose through my art to abandon myself to something that is greater than I. I walk into a landscape and the white noise of the wind brings about the feeling of being absorbed into the air where I no longer know where exactly I end and where nature begins… but that I am part of it all and that my presence in that moment is destined.  Somehow my voice becomes insignificant and the truest songs of me echo in the ‘un-silence’.

My process is to be in the presence of my subject, writing down the thoughts that come as well as preliminary studies in ink and pastels before the final work begins. The final stages of my expression take their cue from these combined preliminary references and I seek to capture the essence of those conversations and my personal reactions to the subject.

I work in silence but certain sounds and music inspire me and the process of applying brush to canvas becomes a rhythmic and therapeutic process of dialogue to relay my experience back to the subject.

I hear colours as sound and certain sounds are colours to me. I create art to make visual these songs so that the essence of that moment’s conversation can be communicated.
